When it Seems all Hope is Gone

Sometimes we pray for a solution and we cannot see a way out. The obstacle in front of us seems to big to conquer. We feel trapped. We feel hopeless.

This may be exactly where God wants us to be. Psalm 77 teaches us something about God and His character. It recalls how God has worked in the past.

Psalm 77:15-18 ESV [15] You with your arm redeemed your people, the children of Jacob and Joseph. Selah [16] When the waters saw you, O God, when the waters saw you, they were afraid; indeed, the deep trembled. [17] The clouds poured out water; the skies gave forth thunder; your arrows flashed on every side. [18] The crash of your thunder was in the whirlwind; your lightnings lighted up the world; the earth trembled and shook.

“When the waters” - the writer is talking about the Red Sea. If you know the story in Exodus the nation of Israel was trapped. They thought they were doomed. They had the mighty army of Egypt on one side and the Red Sea on the other and they did not have a boat. They were trapped and felt hopeless. The obstacle in front of them was to big to conquer.

This was not the end of the story.

Psalm 77:19 ESV [19] Your way was through the sea, your path through the great waters; yet your footprints were unseen.

The path of salvation was right through the obstacle that seemed too big to conquer. Sometimes God provides a way that we cannot even see. Sometime God provides a way right through the very obstacle we face.

Psalm 77:13-14 ESV [13] Your way, O God, is holy. What god is great like our God? [14] You are the God who works wonders; you have made known your might among the peoples.

You are a God who works wonders”. God may not work when we want Him to and He may not work how we want Him to but we need trust that He is working. God had already made a path through the water, His footprints were already there. He had already walked through it.

God you are a God who works wonders. Trust in the God who works wonders.
