How to do a discovery bible study
A discovery bible study is a set of questions that helps you do just what the name implies, it helps us discover what the bible says. It is primarily meant to be done in small groups but can be done alone. When you meet together in your group you ask some initial questions just to see if anyone needs help or prayer and ask people if they used what they learned last week. Once you have caught up as a group you will pick a passage of scripture and read it (preferably several verses or even a chapter). Ask someone to retell the overall theme of the passage in their own words and then read it again. Now you are ready to discover together by asking questions of the passage and the goal is to get everyone to contribute. By getting everyone to contribute you get will learn to see more in scripture that you might have missed if you were just looking by yourself. What does this passage say about God, Jesus or His plan? Once you have answered this question and made a list then you ask what does this passage say about us or man in general. Again, the more input from various people the better. Once you have created this list it is time to consider - What do I need to change? This is more individual in that it will probably be different for each person. Who can I tell about what I have learned and who can I invite next week?
This will be repeated every gathering through different passages of the bible for as long as you want. This is a great way to teach your family and kids to learn to see what God says and how to apply it to our lives.
Give it a try.
