Honduras Devotional 3/13
Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world—the desires of the flesh and the desires of the eyes and pride of life—is not from the Father but is from the world. And the world is passing away along with its desires, but whoever does the will of God abides forever.
1 John 2:15-17 ESV
1. It is easy to get caught up in the things of the world. I have spent much of my time worrying about WiFi and being able to get work done this week. Let that sink in, as we spend out day trying to minister people who do not have power or homes and I am fretting over WiFi.
2. The world is passing away along with its desires. We spend so much time chasing and worrying about things that do not matter in life. New cars = pass away. New cell phone = pass away. We spend the bulk of our time on things that are not eternal.
3. What can we focus on today, this week, and this year that are eternal? What do we spend our time thinking about and worrying about that do not matter? Let's begin to focus on things that are eternal.
The focus is in this passage is that we should not love the world because there is something better to love. There is something eternal. God is eternal and people are eternal. Our focus should be on God and people.
"Teacher, which is the great commandment in the Law?" And he said to him, "You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. On these two commandments depend all the Law and the Prophets."
Matthew 22:36-40 ESV
